Small kitchens don’t need more willpower — they need fewer decisions. The trick is giving every object one obvious home, so tidying becomes automatic instead of a weekend project. Here are twelve ideas we use ourselves, roughly in order of effort.
Go vertical first
1. Stack a second level on your counter. A simple counter shelf doubles the usable surface under your cabinets — mugs below, jars on top.
2. Use corner walls. Corners are usually dead space. A small glass corner shelf turns one into a spot for oils, salt and the pepper mill.
3. Hang what you reach for daily. A wall-mounted peg rack by the door isn’t just for coats — aprons, tote bags and oven mitts live happily there.
Tame the cupboards
4. Double your shelf height. An expandable two-tier organiser means plates don’t sit on top of bowls on top of more plates.
5. Give the under-sink zone rails. Sprays and brushes multiply in the dark. A pull-out under-sink organiser fits around the pipes and slides everything into view.
6. Decant the dry goods. Half-open paper bags waste space and go stale. Matching glass jars with sealing lids stack neatly and let you see what’s actually left.
Sort the small stuff
7. One pot for tools. A compartmented utensil holder next to the hob ends the drawer-rummage.
8. Make plates self-organising. A small plate and bowl rack inside a cabinet keeps stacks separated and grabbable with one hand.
9. Park the sponge properly. A sink caddy that drains into the sink keeps the counter dry and the sponge from going swampy.
Think in zones
10. Build a drinks corner. Wine doesn’t need a cellar — a small pine rack stores nine bottles in 33 cm of counter.
11. Claim the laundry gap. If your washing machine lives in the kitchen, a frame shelf over the machine adds two whole storage levels.
12. Seal and freeze the overflow. Batch-cooking only works if portions survive the freezer — a vacuum sealer makes leftovers flat, stackable and freezer-burn-free.
Start with one zone — usually under the sink — and give it a week. Calm spreads.
